DEFINITION - What is event log management software (ELMS)?

Event log management software (ELMS) is an application used to monitor change management and prepare for compliance audits at enterprises. ELMS is a key tool for IT adminstrators that must demonstrate to executives that an organization is prepared for a compliance audit. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) specifically require that public companies or those that handle personal health information monitor or retain audit trails.

In addition to basic features like automated tracking of backups or user account creation of deletion, new versions of event log management software feature monitoring and real-time notifications and complex reporting capabilites. IT administrators can instantly be informed of a potential security breach, like a former employee trying to delete important data or recover deleted data. A critical feature in event log management software is nonrepudiation. Compliance auditors require data generated directly from an application to prove that proof log records were not manipulated, removed or modified.
