audit log (AL)

Contributor(s): Ben Cole

An audit log is a document that records an event in an information (IT) technology system.

In addition to documenting what resources were accessed, audit log entries usually include destination and source addresses, a timestamp and user login information.

Regulations such as HIPPA, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Sarbanes Oxley Act have specific mandates relating to audit logs.
